Dr Alpay Sabuncuoglu is a Research Associate at the Alan Turing Institute. His research interests include Human-AI Interaction, AI safety and fairness of AI-enabled systems. In his work, he aims to utilise state-of-the-art technologies, particularly AI, to achieve more accessible, affordable, and fair public good solutions. In this talk, Alpay will introduce “fairness” as one of the safety characteristics of an AI-enabled system. He will discuss the current challenges in different sectors including digital public infrastructure, finance, and health. He will introduce proactive approaches for mitigating bias to achieve a “fairness-by-design” throughout system development. Then, he will discuss the research directions.
